This year, Tucan Travel is giving travellers the chance to sink their teeth into its all-new 14-night Transylvania Tale tour, which includes a visit to Bran Castle, marketed as the home of Dracula. This multi-country tour starts in Budapest, ends in Istanbul and traverses the length of Romania inbetween.
Tucan’s Europe destination manager, Berta Marin, says for metro.co.uk : ‘Romania is of course home to Dracula but the country is much more than that. Travel in Romania means passing through countryside still farmed by hand, crossing historic empires, and entering ancient walled towns where women sew, sitting on the steps of their homes.
‘Untouched by mass-tourism, the main squares, mosques and churches remain pleasingly crowd-free.’
First departure is April 20. From £1,379 per person, excl flights
Go wild in the meadows
Nature lovers will find the Carpathian foothills – rich with woodland, wild meadows and ancient farming practices – a verdant paradise.
This summer, Nature Trek is offering a special eight-day holiday where budding botanists can explore this forest-clad region of central Romania.
An expert will lead the group to the Piatra Craiului (King’s Rock) National Park, a natural paradise unmatched in Eastern Europe for its range of biodiversity. On the edge of the park, at Zarnesti Gorge, there will be time to explore colourful alpine meadows and towering sheer rock faces.
The tour also visits Bucegi National Park, known for its wide variety of landscapes and habitats. The pristine natural environment found throughout the region means bees, butterflies and other creatures have been able to thrive, so don’t forget to pack a macro-camera lens to catch it all in its miniature beauty.
Departs June 11, costs from £1,395 incl flights.
About Tucan Travel:
Travel addicts Pip and Liliana Tyler founded one of the first ever South American adventure tour companies in 1987 and named their business Tucan Travel, after the famous South American bird with its traditional Spanish spelling. As their reputation for offering excellent adventurous public transport tours spread and demand increased, the Tylers decided to expand and joined forces with fellow tour operator Matt Gannan in 1997, and with his fleet of expedition vehicles the company started pioneering many of the first overlanding routes in South America.
