The Carpathian Delta Doripesco signifies natural harmony. The fish lives in a controlled natural environment with water vegetation, cane, birds and water animals.

The Carpathian Delta – Doripesco is a natural protected area at the European level (H.G. 2151/2004) and Ramsar Site – International Importance Wetland – the only one of this kind in Transylvania and among the five in Romania.

The Carpathian Delta is constituted by an accumulation lake and a system of ponds that totalize 414 ha. This natural protected area has received is statute due to the birds and their habitats. Each year, over 200 species of birds nest in the Carpathian Delta. Some of them are included in international conventions and directives: Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Great Egret (Casmerodius albus), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Corncrake (Crex crex). For some species, the Carpathian Delta has the most numerous effectives in Transylvania: Black Stork, Little Egret, Great Egret, and Shelduck.

The number of effectives recorded annually is over 20.000 which is an important criterion for maintaining the international importance wetland statute.

What bird species could we observed ?

During breeding season
–    In this period we could see: Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea),  Great Egret (Casmerodius albus), Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), Pochard (Aythya ferina), Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) – in some years, Coot (Fulica atra), Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Corncrake (Crex crex), species of Crakes (Porzana porzana, P. parva), Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus), different species of passerines, such as: Reed Warblers (4 species), Savi’s and River Warbler (Locustella spp.), Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus), Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus), Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), Stonechat (Saxicola torquata), Red – backed Shrike (Lanius collurio), Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus), Corn Bunting (Miliaria calandra). Some of these species are breeding here with high population for the Transylvania territory. In some cases the breeding population could represent about 1% or more than 1% of the minimum Romanian breeding population, as for: Grey Heron, Purple Heron, and Marsh Harrier

During migration (spring and autumn)

–    During spring and fall (autumn) migration the area is visited by hundreds or thousands of birds, such as: Divers, Grebes, Cormorants, Geese, Ducks, Waders, Gulls, and Terns. During fish harvesting tens hectares of mudflat are occurring. In this habitat many bird species and populations are feeding and resting. Some of these species are “key” species for their conservation at the local level (Black Stork, Great Egret). In these periods we could observed also birds of prey, such as: Eagles, Osprey, Hawks, Harriers, Buzzards, Falcons etc.). In the last years 1 – 2 White – tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) have wintering here

Characteristic of the area

–    One of the few breeding place in reed bed for Grey Heron from Romania and the single from Transylvania
–  The single breeding site of Great Egret from the central part of Romania (Transylvania), this species has bred here in the 2006 breeding season
–    The largest colony of Purple Heron from Transylvania, including Rotbav fishpond colony, 10 km from Dumbravita

What could we fish ?

–  The reservoir is one of the best angling area from Brasov County and from Transylvania. Both local and non – local anglers are attracted by its fish and its angling conditions
–     You could fish: Carp, Chinese Carp, Goldfish, Perch, Pike, Alburnus and others (dumbravita-natura2000.ro)
