“In 1714, Brasov Senator Johann Draudt, converted to Catholicism, raised on Tampa a chapel dedicated to St. Leonard. After its construction, on several occasions, gangs of thieves have robbed and desecrated the church.
“On June 10, 1737, the day of Pentecost, at 3 o’clock in the afternoon,” lightning struck the chapel, before the altar, a papist German tailor and his wife, who had taken refuge there … their dog was struck too. In time the chapel was ruined.
For a long time after, Tampa was called the Chapel Hill ( Kapellenberg, in German).
